St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation & Peace
Following complete destruction by a bomb in 1993, reconstruction of the Church began in 2001.
Where possible the surviving sections were restored and the Church rebuilt in a new form reusing salvaged and repaired materials, reinstating its medieval exterior and creating a new meeting space inside to serve as a Centre for Reconciliation and Peace.
The brief was not to re-create everything exactly as it had been before the bomb, but to create a building that told the story of its destruction and which was suitable for its new use as a meeting place.
St Ethelburga’s was re-consecrated as a church by the Bishop of London on 12 November 2002. The following day, the St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace was officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales.
St Ethelburga’s is a Grade 1 listed building.
