Museums and Visitor Centres

Valence House Museum

The site is located within the Becontree pre-war housing estate in Dagenham.

The project comprised the refurbishment and conversion of a Grade ll* manor house to form

  • a local museum
  • the construction of a new visitors centre providing a local studies library, educational facilities, cafe and shop.

The house required:

  • significant structural repairs and alterations in order to provide appropriate museum and gallery space
    complete with disabled access
  • and renewal of mechanical and electrical installations.

Two new secure and environmentally controlled archive and storage facilities were provided on site to house the Borough’s historic archives and museum collections. The collection of buildings are set within a newly designed parkland landscape linking the Museum with the new build facilities which has been enhanced by reinstating part of the original moat.

Sawyer Fisher provided initial budget estimates in order to gain HLF Stage One funding and then provided full pre and post contract services following a successful Stage 2 grant.
